Hailey Baptiste’s tennis journey has been marked by overcoming challenges in tennis, often facing tough losses alone. Before this year, Baptiste spent extensive time traveling solo, persevering through matches on her own. “I spent about two and a half years just pushing through matches,” the world No. 70 shared after her victory over Japan’s Nao Hibino, which advanced her to the third round of a major for the first time.
Despite these challenges, Baptiste emerged stronger. “After a loss, I didn’t really have anyone to talk to,” she recalled. “Friends would just say, ‘Tough luck.’ I had to debrief by myself. But I learned a lot about myself and the game. It gave me confidence and a new love for tennis.”

Now, Baptiste benefits from a new support system, including Franklin Tiafoe, brother of ATP star Frances Tiafoe, and Eric Hechtman, former coach of Venus Williams. Baptiste’s coaching team dynamics have evolved to include Franklin full-time. This link provides insights into Frances Tiafoe’s journey, showcasing the success Baptiste aspires to emulate.
Baptiste’s journey mirrors that of the Tiafoe brothers. Both natives of the Washington, D.C. area, Baptiste and the Tiafoe family share a bond spanning 15 years. “We grew up playing at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Maryland,” she said, referencing this program, which was instrumental in shaping their early careers.
Franklin Tiafoe played a significant role in Baptiste’s formative years. “After school, he’d hit with me for an hour or two, and we’d just talk,” Baptiste shared. Therefore, having Franklin join her team full-time has contributed to her most successful year as a pro. “It’s a blessing,” Franklin expressed. “Being part of her journey after all these years is amazing.”
